Seoul city sets up special memorial altar for the late Seoul mayor Park

A special memorial altar is set up for the public to pay their respects and express their condolences for the Seoul mayor Park Won-soo, who was found dead near Mount Bugaksan in the capital.
Our Choi Won-jong has been at the scene since this morning. Won-jong what can you tell us.Good evening, Daniel. I’m here at Seoul Plaza where the city has set up a special memorial altar for the late Seoul mayor Park. From noon today, thousands of people have visited the altar, including high-profile individuals like Hyundai Motor Group Vice Chairman Chung Eui-sun.
As I mentioned earlier, Park had been hailed as a progressive political leader who focused on social issues like climate change and the recent outbreak of COVID-19.
However, last Wednesday, Park was facing a criminal investigation for sexual harassment following an allegation by his former secretary.
Despite much speculation after his death, the public is still awaiting an official report from the authorities. Many people have already visited the altar despite the hot summer weather today.
What’s the atmosphere there like right now?

Well Daniel, this event only started at 11 AM, Korea time, but as of 3pm, more than 3 thousand people had visited the memorial to pay their respects for Mayor Park.
As you can see behind me there are still many people lining up and waiting to pay their respects.
We saw some people taking pictures in front of the altar to remember him, and we also witnessed some crying over Park’s death.
We talked to one visitor who has lived in Seoul for more than 20 years. Now, take a listen.

“I can’t believe this happened. I can’t say we knew each other very well, but it’s so difficult to admit that he is no longer with us.”

In the meantime, the city has said the altar will be operated at the Seoul Plaza from 11 AM, July 11 to 10 PM, July 13, adding that Park’s body will be moved on July 13.
For those unable to visit the altar in person, Seoul city has also set up an online platform for those who wish to pay their respects to Park.
