Telephone Talk between Foreign Minister MOTEGI Toshimitsu and Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi

1. At the outset, Minister Motegi stated that Japan will, standing by with Myanmar, continue to provide maximum support to the nation building of Myanmar by bringing together both its public and private sectors. In response, State Counsellor and Minister Aung San Suu Kyi expressed her hope for Japan’s continued assistance.

2. Following this, Minister Motegi explained Japan’s support to Myanmar for tackling the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), including the provision of Avigan tablets, as requested by Myanmar, and the provision of medical equipment. In response, State Counsellor and Minister Aung San Suu Kyi expressed her gratitude.

3. Regarding the situation of Myanmar’s Rakhine State, Minister Motegi, noting that Japan will fully support Myanmar’s own efforts for improving the situation on the ground, encouraged Myanmar to take legal measures based on the recommendations of the Independent Commission of Enquiry and to steadily implement the order for provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). In response, State Counsellor and Minister Aung San Suu Kyi expressed her appreciation to Japan’s understanding and that Myanmar will firmly address these matters.

4. The two ministers shared the view to work together toward resuming cross-border travel between Japan and Myanmar at an appropriate time while closely monitoring the situation including the status of infections of COVID-19.
