NASA has announced the release of its free Open Science 101 curriculum, a comprehensive online course that aims to teach researchers and students how to practice open science and share their scientific data and findings with the world.
The course, which was launched on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023, is part of NASA’s Transform to Open Science initiative, which supports the White House’s Year of Open Science. The initiative seeks to promote open and equitable access to scientific resources and data, as well as to foster collaboration and innovation among the scientific community.
The Open Science 101 curriculum consists of five modules that cover the definitions, tools, resources, and best practices of open science throughout the scientific workflow. The modules are accessible through an open online platform, where participants can learn at their own pace. Alternatively, participants can also join virtual or in-person instructor-led training sessions, or attend special events hosted by NASA’s strategic partners, such as scientific associations and societies.
The course is designed to meet the needs of researchers at every stage of their open science journey, from beginners to experts. It also helps prepare researchers to incorporate required open science data management plans when applying for NASA grant funding.
NASA’s associate administrator for science, Nicola Fox, said that the course is not only an educational resource, but also a movement that encourages community-driven learning and knowledge exchange6. “Our new curriculum is a testament to the incredible potential that emerges when open science experts from academia, industry, and government unite. With this initial rollout, we’re not just launching a course; we’re igniting a movement where learners actively shape the course’s trajectory,” she said.
The course is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about open science, regardless of their background or experience. NASA hopes that the course will empower researchers, early career scientists, and underrepresented communities with the knowledge and tools necessary to embrace open science practices and maximize the impact of their work.
